Tool-Level Quarantine

MCPProxy provides tool-level quarantine that detects changes to individual tool descriptions and schemas using SHA256 hashing. This protects against "rug pull" attacks where a previously trusted MCP server silently modifies tool descriptions to inject malicious instructions.

How It Works

When an upstream server connects and reports its tools, MCPProxy computes a SHA256 hash for each tool based on:

  • Tool name
  • Tool description
  • Tool input schema (JSON)

This hash is compared against previously approved hashes to detect changes.

Trust-baseline model

A trusted server is one that is not under server-level quarantine (quarantined: false) — whether you added it that way, loaded it from config, or approved it out of quarantine. When a trusted server is discovered and it has no prior tool-approval baseline, its current toolset is treated as that baseline: every current tool auto-approves (status approved, approved_by: "auto-baseline") rather than stranding as pending. Approving a server is trusting the tools it ships with.

Once the baseline exists, tool-level quarantine guards against later changes:

  • An existing approved tool whose hash later changes → changed (rug pull) → blocked.
  • A genuinely-new tool that appears after the baseline → pending → blocked.

A quarantined server (quarantined: true) is the exception: none of its tools auto-approve — they all stay pending until you approve the server, which then promotes them to the baseline.

Detection Flow

Server connects → Tools discovered → For each tool:

When a tool is pending or changed, it is:

  • Blocked from the search index (not returned by retrieve_tools)
  • Blocked from execution (tool calls return an error)
  • Visible in the management UI for review

Index visibility and callability are driven by the same stored status, so a tool is never indexed/visible while being uncallable (or vice versa).

Per-Server Auto-Approve

By default a trusted server's baseline auto-approves, but post-baseline changes and additions are still reviewed (changed / pending). To opt a server out of that review entirely — auto-approving every change and addition, including rug-pulls — set auto_approve_tool_changes: true:

Security: auto_approve_tool_changes: true turns off rug-pull detection for that server — a later malicious description/schema change is silently approved. Only enable it for servers you fully control.

REST API: auto_approve_tool_changes round-trips through the server REST API. GET /api/v1/servers includes it on each server object (omitted when unset — the tri-state nil is preserved so the Web UI can tell "never set" from an explicit false), and POST/PATCH /api/v1/servers/{id} accept it. As a tri-state *bool, omitting it on PATCH leaves the stored value unchanged; sending an explicit false clears a prior true. The value is persisted to BBolt so it survives a save/restart.

Auto-Approve Behavior

Tools are automatically approved (no manual review needed) when:

  • quarantine_enabled is false globally, or the server still carries the deprecated skip_quarantine: true — recorded with approved_by: "auto".
  • A trusted server establishes its baseline (first discovery with no prior baseline, or migrating already-stranded pending tools whose hash is unchanged) — recorded with approved_by: "auto-baseline".
  • The server has auto_approve_tool_changes: true and a post-baseline change or addition occurs — recorded with approved_by: "auto-approve-changes".

Migrating existing installs

Earlier releases stranded trusted-server tools as pending. On upgrade, the next discovery pass on a trusted server with no approved baseline promotes those stranded pending records (whose stored hash matches the live tool) to approved automatically — no user action required. A changed (rug-pull) record is never cleared by this migration.

Managing Tool Approvals

CLI: Inspect Tools

View the approval status of all tools for a server:

Web UI

  1. Open the MCPProxy dashboard
  2. Click on a server in the server list
  3. Navigate to the Tools tab in the server detail view
  4. Review pending and changed tools and click Approve or Approve All

Each quarantined tool also offers a Block button (and the banner a Block All) next to Approve. Blocking rejects the tool: it leaves the quarantine list and is disabled in the tools list, so AI agents can neither see nor call it. Blocking is reversible — re-enable the tool later with its toggle in the tools list (or mcpproxy tools enable <server:tool>).

The server detail view's Tool Quarantine banner surfaces every pending (new, never-approved) or changed (rug-pull) tool while the server itself is not quarantined. Both are genuinely blocked by the backend until the operator acts, and the server list page counts them (pending_count + changed_count), so the banner and the count agree. The banner carries a short, dismissible hint noting that pending tools come from tool-level quarantine and can be auto-approved by setting skip_quarantine: true (per-server) or quarantine_enabled: false (global). While the server-level Security Quarantine banner is showing, the Tool-Quarantine banner is suppressed entirely — the operator approves the server first, and the two banners never appear at once.

The server list page shows a quarantine badge with the count of pending/changed tools for each server.

The server detail view's Configuration tab carries an Auto-approve tool changes toggle (a Tool-change approval card) bound to the per-server auto_approve_tool_changes flag. It is OFF by default (protected); a ⚠️ hint beneath it explains that enabling it disables rug-pull protection for that server — future tool description/schema changes and newly added tools are then trusted automatically instead of held for review. Toggling persists through the existing PATCH /api/v1/servers/{id} path. (As noted under Per-Server Auto-Approve, the runtime enforcement of this flag rolls out in an upcoming release.)

Doctor Command

The mcpproxy doctor command includes a "Tools Pending Quarantine Approval" section:

Quarantine Stats in Servers API

The GET /api/v1/servers response includes quarantine metrics for each server:

The quarantine field is only present when there are pending or changed tools.

Storage

Tool approval records are stored in the BBolt database (~/.mcpproxy/config.db) in the tool_approvals bucket. Each record contains:

  • Server name and tool name
  • Approved hash and current hash
  • Approval status, timestamp, and approver
  • Previous and current description/schema (for diff viewing)

Records are cleaned up when a server is removed.

Relationship to Server-Level Quarantine

Tool-level quarantine is a separate system from server-level quarantine:

Both systems work together: a quarantined server's tools are never indexed regardless of tool approval status.

Best Practices

  1. Review changed tools carefully: A changed status may indicate a rug pull attack where a malicious server silently modifies tool descriptions
  2. Use auto_approve_tool_changes sparingly: A trusted server's baseline is already auto-approved; only set auto_approve_tool_changes: true for servers you fully control where you also want post-baseline changes/additions approved without review (this disables rug-pull protection for that server). The deprecated skip_quarantine: true is migrated onto this key automatically.
  3. Monitor the doctor output: Run mcpproxy doctor regularly to check for pending tools
  4. Export descriptions for audit: Use the export API to keep records of approved tool descriptions
  5. Check activity logs: Monitor tool_description_changed events for unexpected changes
